Does World Market Take EBT?
Interestingly, some World Market stores (around 35% of them) accept EBT.
If a World Market local store accepts EBT, it must first meet the criteria for becoming a Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) retailer.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) provides nutrition assistance to eligible, low-income individuals and households via a monthly benefit on an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card, similar to a debit card, which can be used at authorized retailer stores to purchase food. SNAP is the largest Federal nutrition assistance program.
Households use their EBT card to purchase food at authorized retailers. SNAP benefits are also accepted at thousands of farmers’ markets nationwide.
A World Market store must meet one of the following criteria to become a USDA-authorized EBT/SNAP retailer:
- A specific variety and quantity of staple food items must be kept on hand.
- More than half of its gross retail sales must come from staple food items.

Unfortunately, most World Market stores cannot accept EBT as they do not meet the minimum requirements outlined below to support the program.

- meat, poultry or fish
- bread or cereal
- vegetables or fruits
- dairy products
OR
- More than half (50%) of the total dollar amount of all retail sales (food, nonfood, gas and services) sold in the store must be from selling eligible staple foods.

- Other foods such as snack foods and non-alcoholic beverages; and
- Seeds and plants used to produce food for the household to eat.
Households CAN NOT use SNAP benefits to buy:
- Beer, wine, liquor, cigarettes, or tobacco
- Vitamins, medicines, and supplements.
- An item with a Supplement Facts label is considered a supplement and is not eligible for SNAP purchase.
- Live animals (except shellfish, fish removed from the water, and animals slaughtered prior to pick-up from the store).
- Foods that are hot at the point of sale
- Any nonfood items such as:
- Pet foods
- Cleaning supplies, paper products, and other household supplies.
- Hygiene items, cosmetics
You will need to purchase any EBT-ineligible items in a separate transaction with a different payment method, such as cash or credit card.
