Mega Millions – Texas Lottery

Mega Millions is a multi-state lottery game that Texans have grown to enjoy.

Choose 5 numbers plus a Mega Ball number, and remember that when you buy, you can Megaply your non-grand/jackpot prize winnings!

Mega Millions is one of the two major multi-state lottery games in the United States, with draws held in Atlanta, Georgia, on Tuesdays and Fridays at 11 p.m. ET.

The game costs $2 per ticket and consists of selecting five numbers from a pool of 70 and one Mega Ball number from a pool of 25.

Mega Millions has a starting jackpot of $40 million and a second-tier (Match 5+0) prize of $1,000,000.

  1. In the case of a discrepancy between the numbers and the official drawing results, the official drawing results will prevail.

How long is your winning ticket valid?

Scratch tickets are valid for 180 days from the close date of the game set by the Texas Lottery.

How and where prizes are claimed is simplified below:

1. Prizes Claimed at Retailer Locations

Retailers may, and are encouraged to, pay prizes up to and including $599.

2. Prizes Claimed at Claim Centers and Texas Lottery Commission Headquarters

Prizes less than or equal to $2,500,000 that are not paid by annuities may be claimed at any Texas Lottery claim center.

Also, prizes less than or equal to $5,000,000 that are not paid by annuities may be claimed at Texas Lottery claim centers in Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston and San Antonio.

Prizes greater than $5,000,000, all Lotto Texas®, Powerball® and Mega Millions® jackpot prizes, and prizes paid by annuities must be processed at Texas Lottery headquarters in Austin.

If you believe you are a holder of such a ticket, please call 800-375-6886 to complete an initial inquiry on your ticket and schedule an appointment to complete the processing of your claim.

3. Prizes Claimed by Mail

Prizes of $1 to $5,000,000 may also be claimed by mail.

The Texas Lottery Commission must check claims over a certain amount for state warrant holds and IRS reporting.

Therefore, U.S. Citizens and Resident Aliens are required to provide a Social Security/Tax ID Number to claim prizes of $25 or more and require a claim form for processing.

Deadlines for Claiming Prizes

A ticket holder forfeits any claim to a prize for a draw game after the expiration of the 180th day following the draw date and for a scratch ticket game after the expiration of the 180th day following the official “end of game” as determined by the Commission.

These deadlines may be extended for a period of time for certain “eligible” military personnel.

Follow these simple DOs and DON’Ts for speedy claims:

  • DO provide only one signature per ticket.
  • DO submit a claim form with tickets that are mailed into a claim center.
  • Don’t purchase a “winning ticket” from a stranger. The ticket may be stolen, altered, fake, or the prize may already be paid.
  • Do not attempt to tape or glue torn tickets together before submitting them with a claim. Just submit the torn pieces.
  • Do not use “white-out” to cover information on the ticket.
  • Don’t make extra marks or notes on the tickets.
  • Don’t scribble out information on the tickets.
